How to Write a Lab Report
Aug 10th 2011, 07:58

I tried to think of an amusing anecdote to relate to you about lab reports, but mainly I associated writing them with staying up until 3 am (procrastination is one of my better-developed skills) and wondering how much experimental error was too much (my instructor took off points for that). Consequently, I could write a nice blog post on how to calculate error, but let's start with the basics today.

Lab reports are an essential part of all laboratory courses and usually a significant part of your grade. For the most part, these reports have a structure similar to that of a scientific technical paper, so learning to organize your thoughts and write down your results is good practice for preparing publications. If your instructor gives you an outline for how to write a lab report, use that. Here's a format for a lab report you can use if you aren't sure what to write or need an explanation of what to include in the different parts of the report.
