According to
NPR, banana peels may be an effective media for water purification. Brazilian environmental chemist Gustavo Castro chopped and dried banana peels and used them to filter water from Brazil's copper- and lead-contaminated Paran� River. The peels, which are reusable, removed the metals better than carbon or silica. Castro believes this may be due to the presence of carboxylic acids in the banana peels, which are known to bind metal cations.
