Banana Peels to Purify Water
Aug 16th 2011, 14:20

According to NPR, banana peels may be an effective media for water purification. Brazilian environmental chemist Gustavo Castro chopped and dried banana peels and used them to filter water from Brazil's copper- and lead-contaminated Paran River. The peels, which are reusable, removed the metals better than carbon or silica. Castro believes this may be due to the presence of carboxylic acids in the banana peels, which are known to bind metal cations. Details about the research are published in the American Chemical Society's Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research journal.
